Over the last five years, as the schools I've worked with have struggled increasingly to fit more content into less time, I've found myself writing curriculum units that answer the questions "What is it that a student must know about this topic?" and "How much time will it take to enable the student to learn it?" There are additional questions which should be considered in a curriculum review process.
None of these questions is easy to answer: each results in some hard choices being made about content, strategies, and resources. The answers to those questions will differ from community to community.
There is another reason to adapt, modify, or write curriculum. The student with significant learning disabilities may not be able to access information as successfully as students who don't face those challenges. In some cases, in order to keep a student engaged in Jewish learning, it may be practical to assign different materials, based on that student's interests.
